Common Electrical Problems

A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing exactly what it was installed to do, and the useful question is which of three things it is reacting to. An overload means the circuit is carrying more than it was designed for. A short circuit means two conductors are touching where they should not. A ground fault means current is finding a path it was never meant to take. The symptom looks identical in all three cases; the fix does not.

Flickering is the symptom most often dismissed and most worth attention. Lights that dip briefly when a large motor starts are usually normal. Lights that flicker at random, or that flicker on several circuits at once, can indicate a loose or failing service neutral — a fault that raises voltage on part of the house while lowering it on the rest, and one of the few that damages appliances throughout a home rather than on one circuit.

Then there are the symptoms you find rather than notice. A warm switch plate or receptacle cover means resistance in a connection carrying current. An outlet that works intermittently, or only when the plug is held at an angle, usually means a back-stabbed connection has loosened and is arcing. A faint smell of hot plastic near a device is the same story further along.

Diagnostic Process

Diagnosis starts with mapping rather than testing. In an older house the circuit layout rarely matches the panel labels, and what a fault takes out is often a better description of the circuit than anything written on the door. Establishing what is actually fed from where narrows the search before a single cover comes off.

The visible symptom is rarely where the fault is. Circuits in older homes were laid out to serve large areas, so one bad connection takes out everything downstream of it — which means the dead outlet is frequently the last device on a run whose problem sits several rooms away.

Thermal imaging and circuit tracing exist to shorten that search without opening walls. A connection that is heating shows as a temperature difference through a cover plate, and a tracer follows a conductor through plaster that would otherwise have to be opened to be seen. Neither replaces testing, but both decide where to test first, which is what keeps a diagnosis from becoming demolition.

Safety First

Some symptoms are worth acting on before anyone arrives. A burning or fishy smell near a device, visible scorching, or sparking at an outlet all mean switching that circuit off at the panel (or the main, if the circuit cannot be identified) rather than waiting to see whether it worsens. Heat and arcing do not stabilize on their own.

The one thing not to do is reset a breaker repeatedly. A breaker that trips immediately on being reset is reporting a fault that has not gone away, and each reset sends current back into it. Something to keep in mind is that a breaker that has been reset many times wears, and can eventually fail to trip when it matters.

Everything else is about establishing what changed. When the problem started, what was running at the time, whether it follows a particular appliance, and whether anything was worked on recently are the questions that most often locate a fault faster than any instrument. It is worth noting them down as they happen rather than trying to recall them later.

Intermittent faults deserve a note of their own, because they are the ones most likely to be dismissed. A problem that comes and goes is not a small one — it is usually a connection that is arcing intermittently, which is both harder to find and more likely to cause damage than a clean break. A fault that disappears before anyone looks at it has not resolved itself.
