Boiler Installation
Replacing a boiler is rarely a like-for-like swap, because the original was usually sized for a house that has since been insulated, re-windowed and air-sealed. Fitting the same output again produces a boiler that short cycles, which wastes fuel and wears the equipment faster than steady running would.
Condensing boilers extract enough heat from the flue gases that the water vapor in them condenses, which is where the efficiency comes from. The condition for achieving it is a low enough return water temperature, so a condensing boiler connected to a system designed to run hot may never condense at all and will perform like a conventional one.
Venting changes with it. A condensing boiler vents through plastic out a side wall rather than up the chimney, and anything else that shared that chimney is then venting alone into a flue sized for two appliances. That has to be resolved as part of the work rather than discovered the following winter.
Boiler Repair
Pressure is the first thing to look at, and the gauge is on the boiler. A system that has lost pressure will not circulate properly and will leave the upper floors cold while the boiler itself seems to be running. Pressure that keeps falling means water is leaving somewhere, and a system topped up repeatedly is a leak being fed rather than a system being maintained.
Air in the loops is the other common cause of rooms that will not heat. Air collects at the high points, blocks circulation, and produces a radiator that is hot at the bottom and cold at the top. Bleeding is straightforward; air that returns quickly is a symptom of something else, usually the leak that is also feeding the pressure drop.
Beyond that, the components that fail are the circulating pump, the expansion tank and the zone valves. A waterlogged expansion tank shows up as pressure that swings widely as the system heats and cools. A zone valve that has stopped opening presents as one part of the house going cold while everywhere else works — which points at the valve rather than at the boiler.
Radiant Heating
Radiant heat warms surfaces and the people in a room rather than the air, and that changes how a room feels at a given thermostat setting. It is why houses with radiators feel comfortable at temperatures that would feel cool in a forced-air house, and why the heat feels even rather than arriving in gusts.
The trade-off is response time. A radiant system has considerable thermal mass (cast iron radiators, or a slab with tubing in it), so it takes time to come up and time to cool down. Deep setbacks that work well with forced air work poorly here, because the system cannot recover quickly enough to make the saving worthwhile.
It is also quiet, and it moves no air. Nothing is being blown around, so there is no duct noise and nothing circulating dust from room to room. The corollary is that a house heated this way has no ductwork to add cooling to later, which is why adding air conditioning to a radiator-heated home usually means ductless or high-velocity equipment.

Why is my radiator cold at the top and hot at the bottom?
Air trapped at the high point of the radiator, blocking circulation. Bleeding it usually resolves it. Air that comes back quickly is a symptom rather than the problem — most often the same leak that is causing the system pressure to drop.
My boiler pressure keeps dropping. Is that normal?
No. A sealed system should hold its pressure. Pressure that falls repeatedly means water is leaving somewhere, and topping it up each time feeds the leak rather than fixing it — while introducing fresh oxygenated water that corrodes the system from inside.
Should I turn my boiler down when I go out?
Not far. A radiant system has real thermal mass and takes hours to recover, so the deep setbacks that save money with forced air tend not to pay here — the system spends the saving climbing back. A modest setback works; a large one usually means coming home to a cold house that stays cold.
Can I add air conditioning to a house with radiators?
Yes, though not with conventional ducted equipment, because there is no duct network to use. Ductless mini-splits or a high-velocity system running small flexible tubing through existing joist bays are the usual routes. The boiler and radiators stay in place and continue to handle heating.
