When Does a Home Need a Complete Rewire?

Homes built before 1970 with original wiring need a complete rewire to meet current safety standards. Two hazardous wiring types dominate older Wisconsin properties: knob-and-tube wiring and aluminum branch circuits. Knob-and-tube wiring, installed in homes through the 1950s, lacks a ground conductor and cannot safely handle modern appliance loads. Aluminum wiring, common in homes built from 1965 to 1973, oxidizes at connection points, causing arcing, heat buildup, and fire.

Is It Time for a Rewire?

Two-prong outlets throughout a house are the most visible indicator, because they mean the branch circuits have no equipment ground. That was standard practice once and it is not a fault in itself, but it removes the path that a modern appliance relies on to clear a fault safely, and it rules out grounded receptacles anywhere those circuits reach.

Age of the insulation is the other consideration, and it is not something a homeowner can assess from an outlet. Rubber and cloth insulation becomes brittle with decades of heat cycling, and it fails where it has been flexed — at terminations, in boxes and at splices. A conductor can look sound where you can see it and be crumbling where the run turns a corner behind plaster.

The timing question usually answers itself. A rewire while walls are open during a renovation is a fraction of the disruption of the same work done on its own, so the cheapest moment to do it is one that arrives whether or not anyone planned for it. Waiting past that moment generally means paying twice — once to open the walls, and once again later.

Knob and Tube Replacement

Knob-and-tube wiring ran individual conductors through porcelain knobs and tubes, spaced apart and open to the air. That spacing was the design: the air around each conductor carried heat away, which is why the method worked reliably for the loads of its era.

It is what happened afterwards that causes problems. Insulation blown or laid into attics and wall cavities envelops conductors that were designed to shed heat into open air, which is why the code prohibits it. Later alterations are the other failure point — decades of splices made into original runs by people who were not electricians, often inside walls, often without a box.

The scope question is not whether knob-and-tube exists in a house but how much of it is still live. Much of it in older homes was abandoned in place during earlier work and carries nothing at all. Establishing which runs are still energized is what separates a targeted job from a whole-house one, and it is worth doing before a price is discussed rather than after.

The Rewire Process

A rewire is planned around keeping the house usable. Work proceeds circuit by circuit rather than by shutting off the service and starting at one end, so power stays available in most of the house on most days — which matters, because a whole-home rewire is not a one-day job in any house.

Routing is the craft of it. Basements, attics and existing chases carry most of the new cable, and the objective is to reach every device without opening walls that do not need opening. Plaster and lath is less forgiving than drywall here: it cannot be fished as freely and it does not patch invisibly, so where an opening is genuinely needed it is better identified during the estimate than discovered mid-job.

The work is inspected twice — once at the start, with the cable run and boxes set but before anything is closed up, and again at finish. That first inspection is the reason a rewire cannot be quietly hurried: the walls stay open until it passes, and what the inspector signs off is the record that the work met code long after everyone involved has moved on.
