Electrical Outlet Installation in Milwaukee

Older Milwaukee rooms were built with one or two receptacles, because that is all anyone needed. Adding outlets to them is one of the most common calls we take, and in old housing it is rarely as simple as cutting in a new box.
Adding Outlets in Pre-War Rooms
There are two things that make this process harder in Milwaukee than in newer housing. The walls are plaster and lath rather than drywall, which does not tolerate fishing cable the way drywall does and does not patch invisibly. The circuit you would extend from is often an original two-wire run with no ground, which cannot legally be extended as-is.

Box depth is the constraint nobody anticipates. Boxes set into plaster in the 1920s are shallow, and a modern device (particularly a GFCI, a smart switch or anything with electronics behind the faceplate) takes up considerably more room than the porcelain-and-brass fitting it replaces. Where the conductors will not fold back into the space left, the box is replaced rather than forced, which is a small job in an accessible wall and a larger one otherwise.

GFCI, Two-Prong Outlets and Kitchens
Two-prong ungrounded receptacles are still everywhere in the city's pre-1960 housing. Replacing them with a three-prong outlet on an ungrounded circuit is both unsafe and against code — the correct fixes are a new grounded circuit, or GFCI protection with the outlet labeled as ungrounded.
Kitchens, bathrooms, unfinished basements, garages and exterior locations all require GFCI protection, and Milwaukee basements in particular tend to have original receptacles that predate the requirement entirely.
Kitchen counters are where the gap between old and current practice shows most plainly. Pre-war kitchens were built with one or two receptacles because there was almost nothing to plug in; current practice puts small-appliance circuits above the counter with spacing rules for how far apart they sit.
