Process and Laboratory Systems

Beyond general ventilation the work covers process cooling, dust and fume collection, and the mechanical support around specialized equipment — the systems where a failure stops production rather than making a room uncomfortable.

Industrial ventilation is a different objective from comfort. The question is what has to be removed from the air and how quickly (welding fume, grinding dust, solvent vapor, process heat), and the system is sized around that rather than around a temperature. Make-up air is the half most often underprovided: air extracted has to be replaced, and a building that exhausts more than it admits ends up under negative pressure, with doors that resist opening and appliances that struggle to draft.

Process cooling has requirements that comfort cooling does not. Equipment frequently needs a stable temperature rather than a comfortable one, and it needs it whether or not anyone is in the building — so redundancy and monitoring matter more than efficiency, because the cost of a failure is measured in production rather than in comfort.

Compressed air and its associated drying sit alongside this work in most plants. It is treated as a utility rather than as equipment, which is why leaks are tolerated for years: the loss is invisible and continuous, and it is usually one of the larger avoidable energy costs in a building.

Dust and fume collection is regulated work as well as mechanical work, because what is being removed determines what may be done with it. Combustible dust in particular carries requirements about how it is collected, conveyed and contained that shape the entire design, and a system extended informally over the years frequently no longer matches what was originally engineered. Establishing what the current arrangement actually is tends to come before any discussion of improving it.

Heat recovery is the opportunity most often left on the table in an industrial building. Processes that reject heat continuously and buildings that need heating for much of a Wisconsin year are, in principle, two halves of the same problem — and capturing some of the first to serve the second is usually more effective than any efficiency improvement made to the heating equipment itself. Whether it is worth doing depends on how continuously the process runs and how far the two are from each other.
